  1. I can tell from the extra-strong landing gear that the plane is a Navy jet, so it has to be an F-18. I’d expect that the guy was an aircraft carrier deck hand (one of the most dangerous jobs in the world). The plane might have been coming in for a landing, and the guy was standing in the wrong place. If that was the case, then all he had to do was duck and he would have just had a close call.

    • You are kind of right, but also wrong. Yes, F-18, yes in the navy, (Lucky guess on your part, I’m sure, because marines and other countries have the f-18 as well) I know it’s US Navy because I know that squadron. The black guy was a yellow shirt… or ABH for those who don’t know carrier speak. The launcher is a LAU-127 and he stepped past the foul line during launch and it caught him. The launcher doesn’t really sit that low normally, but when all that tension is put on the launch bar, the jet leans far forward so that’s probably how it got him.

  2. Its easy, this guy was guiding the plane or something involving the plane moving, when something went terribly wrong and his head got hit by the wing “spear” or whtever that thing is called…

  3. I think part of the equation has been overlooked – except for an earlier poster.

The helmet is still intact! This is a helmet I would buy!

    Great advertisement for sales.

  4. I think that when the F-18 was being shot off the flight deck this guy, who must of been a flight officer, didn’t tuck his head down. At first I thought that it was a troubleshooter, but trouble shooters have white or cream colored helmets and shirts. Damn shame.

  5. This guy WAS on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier…. MY aircraft carrier…. He was ABH2 Robert Lemar Robinson, but everyone called him Big Rob…. He died on the flight deck of the Eisenhower back in 2008, during training exercises, while an F/A-18 was launching….
