Sendero Luminoso, or Shining Path was a Maoist rebel group that tried to overthrow the Peruvian government to open the country up for communism. Although decades long conflict had came to an end years ago and once 10,000-strong Sendero Luminoso has been largely inactive since the year 2000, their legacy lingers on as estimated 50,000 land mines still buried in the ground along the Cordillera del Condor on the border between Peru and Ecuador continue to claim victims each year.
Soldier in the video below stepped on a landmine during a routine patrol of the San Judas mountain area. He lost his left leg at the knee – that bone sticking out looks rather gnarly. His right foot was blown off too but the blast also caused severe damage and burns to his right thigh (possible even crotch area) making it look as though this whole leg may have to be amputated at the hip. The wounds seem to have been cauterized so there is no more bleeding however I can imagine he lost a lot of blood and may need transfusion to have his life saved. I don’t think there was any chance to save either of his legs, though.
The handling of the exposed bone by a fellow soldier who’s not wearing any protective gloves seems a bit unprofessional but in a life and death situation when every second counts, I can imagine this was the best he could do. Brutal video:

Yes, most definately on the right side he will be looking at hip disarticulation and transpelvic amputation … and as far as the left side is concerned it will be above the knee … Due to muscular atrophy and mobility between the tibia and the fibula, and the fact that prolonged use of prosthesis could generate future alterations in the amputation stump, therefore above the knee is advised.
