Hernia is a medical condition in which an organ protrudes outside the body through the wall of the cavity where it’s located. The meaning of hernia is rupture (from Latin). In humans, hernia most commonly occurs in the abdominal and groin areas. Genetic propensity, age, pregnancy, being overweight or drastic weight loss can all contribute to the development of hernias. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, the effects of which can be seen in one of the photos is a genetic disorder that results in a defect in collagen synthesis that may cause hernia.
According to the National Center for Health Statistics, approximately 5 million Americans have a hernia. Hernias in the groin area (Inguinal Hernias) are the most common type of hernia among men. Among women, the most common type is Femoral Hernia.
