Benazir Bhutto was the first woman ever to lead an Islamic country. Twice she was elected to be the Prime Minister of Pakistan and twice she was removed from office on grounds of alleged corruption. Her second removal was followed by a self imposed exile but this wasn’t it for Benazir Bhutto and her place in high politics of Pakistan.
President Pervez Musharraf granted Benazir Bhutto amnesty and had all corruption charges nulled. Benazir Bhutto returned to Pakistan from Dubai where she lived in an exile and ran for the position of Prime Minister one more time. Two weeks before scheduled election, on 27 December 2007, she was assassinated.
The pictures below are of the aftermath of bombings that took place on the day Benazir Bhutto returned to Pakistan from exile. The calendar showed October 18, 2007 and Benazir Bhutto had just landed at the Jinnah International Airport. The Pakistan Peoples Party security personnel encircled the truck in which their leader was leaving the airport to keep potential suicide bombers away. The truck had managed to leave the airport safely when explosives laced suicide bombers managed to get close enough to the human chain and detonate themselves.
136 people were killed in the blasts, 450 were injured. Among the killed were 50 members of Bhutto’s security guards and 6 Pakistani police officers. Several high ranking politicians were injured. Benazir Bhutto herself, despite being the primary target, got away unharmed. The enemies got her two months later.
I left original commentary along with photographers’ credits intact, however the stats provided by them at the time the pictures were taken do not match final accounts.
