Mithi shared two videos that show the aftermath of a car bomb explosion in Cotabato City, Philippines. On August 5th, 2013, a car bomb blat killed 8 people and injured 30 more in the predominantly Muslim City of Cotabato, Province of Maguindanao, Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao, Southern Philippines. The mayor of Cotabato City speculated that this was an attempt to kill his sister, the City Administrator. According to an official of the Moro Islamic Liberation front (or MILF – one of major Muslim separatist groups in the Philippines), the bombing was an attempt to stall ongoing peacetalks in Kuala Lumpur, between the Philippine government and the Moro National Liberation Front.
Muslim separatist groups have been operating in the Muslim south (most specifically in the provinces of Tawi-Tawi, Sulu, Basilan, Maguindanao, Cotabato, Basilan, Lanao, Zamboanga, although there have been attacks, bombings, and abductions in the Catholic populated areas of the Philippines) since the 1960s. MNLF was first established in 1969, during the administration of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos. Other groups that exist are the Abu Sayyaf, MILF, and relatively new Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Movement, some of which recieve support from international terrorist organizations such as Al Qaeda and the Indonesia based Jemaah Islamiyah.
It is estimated that the conflict which started in the 60s and continues to the present day has resulted in the deaths of more than 150,000 individuals, including civilians.
