Mexico – 56 Year Old Woman Drowned in Well by Neighbors

Mexico - 56 Year Old Woman Drowned in Well by Neighbors

There’s nothing like accusing someone of practising witchcraft and using the argument to kill them. You’d think we’d moved on from the middle ages, but it’s not quite the case. This 56 year old woman from Mexico is a recent victim of such accusation. The woman was a Tarot reader and the villagers feared that her practise could bring upon them the wrath of God. She was also accused of stealing a TV.

Five of the woman’s neighbors – three men and two women kidnapped the alleged witch and drowned her in the well face down, ass up. Given that she was 56, I’m pretty sure she’d been reading Tarot for some time so why point a witch finger at her now? Clearly, somebody had an unrelated beef with her and brainwashed neighbors with the witchcraft talk to have her killed.

All five perpetrators have been apprehended and are in detention.

  1. That’s the downside of Justicia Popular: what we call in Spanish-speaking countries the “Fuenteovejuna lo hizo!” justice.

Basically, if enough neighbors dislike you, they will kill you and then pretend no one knows anything. Based on a famous play (by Lope de Vega), when a whole town, Fuenteovejuna, killed some sucker and when the investigators came, they just said “Fuenteovejuna did it!”

The moral of the story is that it’s better to be nice to people. If enough want you dead for a coverup, then probably you deserve to be dead.

  2. Sir Bedevere: What makes you think she’s a witch?
Peasant 3: Well, she turned me into a newt!
    Sir Bedevere: A newt?
Peasant 3: [meekly after a long pause] … I got better.
    Crowd: [shouts] Burn her anyway!

  3. Boy it seems that Mexico is pretty bad about people of other beliefs. How many times did she pull out the cards? Then when they invade other countries (without bothering to go there thru the proper channels) and they are looked upon badly because of their practices. They cry Prejudice and what do they do in their mother country. They drown people. What a bunch of idiots. Why can’t everyone just except others. We are all unique and have the right to be ourselves. I know a few witches and they are nice people. They are not devil worshipers. I guess this has something to do with the Bible. Witches believe in Mother Earth and Father God. So that makes them bad?

  4. Oh my thats scary to think about. Imagine being in her shoes, thrown down a well face first, so narrow you couldn’t turn around so you were stuck face down, and you had nothing on the slippery walls to grip. Scary stuff.
