Plane crash in which members of Mamonas Assassinas died shocked Brazil as much as plane crash in which Jenni Rivera died shocked Mexico. What made the tragedy worse was that Brazil was still grieving the tragic death of another of the country’s greats – an F1 pilot Ayrton Senna who died in 1994, less than 2 years prior.
Mamonas Assassinas was a Brazilian satirical rock band. Their sound was a mixture of punk rock with influences from several genres, including country music, heavy metal, progressive rock and Portuguese music. The band’s career started in July 1995, but ended 8 months later, on March 2, 1996.
During the short 8 months of their career, Mamonas Assassinas took Brazil by the storm. Their self titled studio album sold more than 3 million copies, making it an ABPD certified Diamond record. But then, while at the height of their career, all members of the band died in a plane crash.
The Plane Crash
The aircraft in which the members of Mamonas Assassinas died had been chartered to take care of the band’s transportation needs during a Brazilian tour. The band had played a show at Estádio Mané Garrincha in Brasília, from where they took off bound for São Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport in Guarulhos.
With 7 people onboard a Learjet LR-25D, including all 5 members of the band, the pilot failed to land on the first attempt and flew around the runway for a second one. The second attempt never happened because instead of turning the aircraft to the right as directed by the control tower, the pilot started turning to the left, crashing the plane into the Cantareira mountain range, killing all passengers and crew.
The Band
While the name of the band has double meaning in Brazilian Portuguese, band members said that English translation of Mamonas Assassinas is “Killer Big Breasts“. Names of all band members each of whom died in the plane crash were (with their stage names in parentheses). Not one Da Silva in the lot:

- Júlio César Barbosa (Júlio Rasec- keyboards, backing vocals

I remember when it happened, as I was only 15 years old and got these photos in a floppy disk from a high school mate! Pretty messy.

He piloted an F1 car, just as fast as an airplane.
Yeah, F1 racers are sometimes said to be “piloting” their cars. I think it’s stupid personally but hey.

In the second video, one of the band members predicts their own death in a dream.
That video was filmed only 12 hours before the accident, the guy seems worried and says “Last night I dreamed our plane crashed…”

I can’t deny the truth in your words but I would much prefer being killed in a plane crash flying back from some paradise or city of culture than getting squished by a car at rush hour on a grey murky Monday morning in London.

When you actually stop and think of all the entertainers we have lost to plane crashes its a little staggering.
Patsy Cline, Buddy Holly/ Big Bopper et al, almost all of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Reba McEntire’s band and many more that don’t come to mind at the moment.
Of course an honorable mention goes out to Vic Morrow who was decapitated by a helicopter while filming “Twilight Zone”.

As far as the music, they were a hell of alot better than U2 ( at least this band could sing and have some rythm), but that’s not saying much.
