Well “Hello from Amsterdam“. It’s not me sending you the greetings though one day I’d love to pay the City of Diamonds a visit. As of today, Best Gore has a new home and for the first time it’s not in the USA. I moved the website to a server located in Amsterdam. Unfortunately, it didn’t go over without problems.
I apologize for hours of downtime and bad response times during the day proceeding this post. Best Gore is big and gets a lot of traffic which makes server switch challenging. Despite the best of intentions, problems arose and they still seem to persist (related to the hosting company).
It has everything to do with my dedication to your privacy while using Best Gore. Amsterdam is the first choice for webmasters who collect personally identifiable information on their website – such as people’s names, their addresses, social insurance numbers, etc. AND don’t want the US government to snoop around and grant themselves access to it. Obviously, there are websites that collect personally identifiable information specifically to trade it with multi-national corporations who pay big bucks for it, or to allow the Big Brother access to these valuable profiling tools. But this is not why Best Gore exists and I wanted to ensure I have done everything in my power to make sure the little information that is collected (email address is required to use some features of the website and server scripts automatically collect information such as IP addresses or clients used to access the website with) remains untraded.
I moved the website to Amsterdam because I didn’t want to wait around until the US government requests the host to hand them the server side stats so they can evaluate who the users of Best Gore are and where they are coming from. Dutch webhosts have a pretty solid reputation of not handing private information out readily, which is why webmasters who want to protect data of their clients from nosy US government agents choose to host their site there. The notion that one day, despite me ensuring irrefutable privacy to you all, an FBI agent could be sitting at the server pulling any info he wants out of it without me even knowing it was happening made me do it without delay.
So even though I just went through the headache of moving to a new server a couple of weeks ago, I set aside more days to go through the whole damn thing all over again. Unfortunately in just the first day there were so many problems with this host I don’t know how long I’m gonna stick around with them. It can’t just rain, it has to pour.
Kudos to SpitAcid for the pic.
