I used to live over on the ould sod back in the 1980’s when Northern Ireland was a more funky, knife-edge kinda place. I recall lots of people getting shot and killed just going to their work (postmen, taxi-drivers etc) by other Irish People. Maybe the Egyptian is just assimilating himself into the Oirish way of life/ death, sorta getting a feel for the country and wanting to be part of things.
In a different way I found Oirishness filtered into me and I started drinking the Guinness for a number of years. Once i moved away back to Scotland (where the draught Guinness was rubbish) I stopped it altogether… but I am kinda glad it was just the draught ale which I temporarily took up, rather than the self-justified killing of people just going to their work.
