You see the cross-over effect?. Employment opportunities are being gobbled up via cheap workers and free workers creating more and more unemployment amongst the masses thus presenting to them the two simplest options to survive, social security or crime. Sadly however both these options come with the condition of forced unpaid work and so one feeds directly into the other ad infinitum.

We can make as many arguments as we want then about how work can be a punishment for prisoners or how nobody should get social security without having to work a 40 plus hour week for it but it must be understood right from the very beginning that cheap/free workers undermines job security for everybody else as well because employers are not going to pay workers a full wage when they can just let them go and watch the system give them straight back but this time for free.

To conclude, punishment of prisoners should be via loss of liberty(or life depending upon the crime) and leave it at that otherwise you stop deterring social problems and start creating more of them.
