          Hey, man. I’m good. I finally moved out of my apartment and into a house. Which is great for a number of reasons, but most importantly, I can play my drums again! I’ve been stuck playing my Roland TD-6 kit for too long so I’ve been loving having my acoustics to clang around on. I attempted a play-through of some classic Cannibal Corpse songs over the weekend and needless to say I’ve got to get my chops up. Still, fun to sweat it out.

          Nice selection on the Mayhem tune. I saw them again on my birthday last year when they were performing De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas in its entirety. The sound was incredible and Atilla was as entertaining as always.

          Sounds like things are going well. Good thing that you have the Roland to fall back on. I’ve gone through stretches where I had to tame it down a bit. Each time I restart I end with with a grocery bag full of broken sticks. Muscle memory goes quickly.
          I have my son (6) working on double bass peddles and transition to hi-hat, etc.. I’ve had my eye on a Pearl Export 5-piece for him. Probably get that next month. He loves to try to play ‘Absolution’ from Ghost. Really fun song to play.
          Good to hear from you again. Oh and FUCK Alabama! Go Dawgs!

          Yeah, man. The Rolands are a decent substitute and certainly better than nothing. I actually use the brain/ controller when I’m playing my acoustics for the metronome and whatnot. That’s awesome that you’re teaching your son and that he’s interested in good music at such a young age. When I started playing the drums at the age of twelve I was relegated to just a snare drum. So I wanted to play Anthrax and Metallica but usually just played Wipeout. Which got old really quickly. I didn’t know the Ghost song, Absolution, or any of their songs for that matter, but I liked it. I didn’t instantly appreciate it but I was into it by the time it was finished. Pearl Export, nice. My first set of drums was a white Pearl Forum. The toms were huge and sounded like canons. I wish I hadn’t traded them for that shitty Ibanez acoustic-electric guitar of which I can’t even recall its fate. Ah, well. I made plenty of other really stupid purchases, trades, and sales but I think I’ve learned most of my lessons on that by now. When you go through a phase, just wait a minute.

          Dude, that championship game was something else. Fuck Alabama, indeed. I was tired as shit that day and kept dozing off during the game. It looked like they had it there for a minute, but of course in football any damn thing can happen, but I woke up mere seconds after the game ended and was like “GOD DAMN IT!!! WHAT THE FUCK!!!” haha. The Rose Bowl was a hell of a game though.

          @Death-Pod
          I incidentally ran across Ghost on YouTube. The first video I saw was “He Is” (official). My exact thoughts were, “I wonder what kind of silly euro-trash this is gonna be?” By the time the song was over I was looking up everything they’ve done. They have an interesting history as well. Subdivision and Magna Carta Cartel were bad, very bad in my opinion. Tobias Forges’ death metal band, Repugnant was bad by any standard. So this Ghost concept was a brilliant move on their part.
          I like thier 80’s progressive rock sound over Deep Purple or The Doors type foundation with a twist of Satan. The tight rhythm guitar riffs with the synth/piano layered throughout is something that I can appreciate. A phone, tablet or small device does no justice. A good quality sound system is the way to go. You can hear all the little nuance’s and layers.
          And fuck your snare drum. Lol. At age 11 I got a little rubber practice pad because it made no noise. Then 5 years later I got what had to be the cheapest drum kit EVER! I thought my parents hated me. I flipped hamburgers until I got my first Pearl kit. Throw in a compliment of Zildjian, Gibraltar hardware and, well, I don’t have to tell you how many goddamn hamburgers that was.
          What’s your favorite non death/black metal music?

          Hmm. Non-death/ black, I’ll go outside the metalsphere all together; some favorites include Fugazi, Hum, Helmet, Talking Heads, Mr. Bungle (specifically California, the other two records not so much), Mike Oldfield, Grant Lee Phillips/ Buffalo, Isbells (from Denmark, not to be confused with ex-Driveby Truckers Jason Isbells), Mogwai, some standard classical like Chopin and Mozart, and I love Tool. Are they metal? Kind of, but not really. I like some jazz but it’s not my favorite. I have a record called A Wider Embrace by Moire Music Drum Orchestra and Trevor Watts that got me into some other jazz as a lad. Brubeck, Monk, James Moody, etc. Nothing too obscure. I like Simon Phillips a lot as a drummer but I can’t stand most of his music. It’s just such faggy prog-jazz and every song starts to sound the same. In recent years I’ve taken a liking to 70’s Krautrock and I’m really digging into contemporary classical now. I’m wearing out anything by Steve Reich I can find on youtube. Philip Glass, Simeon ten Holt, Arvo Part, etc. Can’t think of anything else off the top of my head.

          Do you dig stuff like this?

          Sorry to hear about the practice pad. I did my time with that sumbitch, too. The worst was having friends who owned drum sets but wouldn’t let me play them. I hated them for that so I can only imagine the frustration of asking for drums and getting a rubber pad. LOL. My grandmother learned to play piano on a cardboard foldout “keyboard.” Imagine how thrilling that must have been. At least as wannabe drummers we got to make noises!

      Wait a minute, isn’t Carpe Noctem the german black metal band
      from that guy who killed a nurse at her home, took pictures of her naked headless body and posted them online? And when the cops were after him he burned his or her house down and killed himself by throwing his car in front of a truck at high speed. This is a fucking crazy story!

      I remember listening to this album once some 5 years ago. Not bad. Anyway, I can’t choose an album as my favorite, I know a hundred of BM bands alone, so it’s hard to choose.

          Hey, hey! How’s it going? Been to any cool shows as of recent? I quit my job and moved out of the big city and to a sleepy little town down here in Georgia. It’s been quite an adjustment but I’m starting to chill out and I’m settling into a new routine and whatnot. No traffic to speak of, my dogs have a huge yard now, I’ve got my drums and guitars all the way up to 11, a new low stress job, and I’ve been hiking and getting out of doors a lot. It’s great! 🙂

      Esoteric Warfare. Mayhem has been around from the start and still kill it live!

      • #112066

        @dan-a-conda

        In my opinion the vast majority of Mayhem’s albums are bad. I also can’t stand this Attila guy. For me the best vocalist Mayhem ever had was Maniac, and then Dead of course. That’s why Chimera is my favorite Mayhem album if I had to pick one. Their live albums rule.

        As a curiosity, even though I’m a huge Black Metal fan, I can’t stand the live visuals most bands use like all this makeup, fake blood, pig heads on stakes and so on. No difference from pop sluts with their fantasy world, convulsing dancers, thematic stages and outfits.

          Music is art and therefore subjective. I’m not a huge black metal fan but I definitely appreciate the level of skill that these bands possess. And to tour for months, keeping that energy…wow!
          As for Mayhem, I’m an Attila guy, no apologies. I did not like Dead as a lead guy. Maniac was a great fit with the band but, again it’s all about personal opinion.
          I know what you mean when you mention all the face paint/costuming etc… It can be a bit much but considering the music, lyrical content and fan base, I don’t think a mainstream look would be a good idea. They’re look is just what the fans, most fans, want and have come to expect.
          You and I are on the exact same page about the pop sluts. Male pop sluts included. Were it not for the corporate side of the the music industry forcing that shit onto the public in movies, tv, advertising etc…those purveyors of absolute garbage would be very much unemployed.

        Varg’s Pagan ASMR is the best.

      • #112064

        @itsplaster

        Varg Vikernes is a real man, and a real genius, in every shape and form. Burzum got me into Black Metal when I was 13 and then years later I found out about his blog and started to follow it. Then the same happened with his Youtube channel, Thulean Perspective. His political views (more like apolitical if you know what I mean) and his views on several different subjects are really eye-opening. But most importantly is the lifestyle he and his beautiful intelligent wife Marie lead and encourage others to do the same. Really inspiring. Their views on Paganism are really eye-opening as well because they know what true paganism is about and they really practice it. There’s a lot of misinformation and distortion in the “mainstream paganism” people know, like there is in so many other subjects.

        I can’t recommend his channel enough and his books enough. Sadly he faces a lot of heat from “right-wing” imbeciles such as zionist cuckservatives, christian nutjobs and the Alt-Right. As if all the leftist fake news and defamation he suffered for decades wasn’t enough. Even his artistic side is affected, with music “critics” giving low scores to masterpieces such as Fallen and leftist pieces of shit calling his rpg MYFAROG racist. After that latter incident I realized how fucking disgusting the situation was getting with even supposedly apolitical sites, such as Metal Sucks and Metal Injection, being bought and paid for.

        Anyway, nice to see people here appreciating Burzum.

      During this year I’ve been listening and getting to know a lot of two different things when it comes down to metal: French black metal bands and russian/slavic folk metal/black metal bands.

      Regarding the ones from France, it’s more modern stuff since I’m well versed in old school french black metal bands from Les LĂ©gions Noires (The Black Legions) since my early teens. You know the ones, MĂĽtiilation and Vlad Tepes. So what have I been listening lately? Two words: Peste Noire.

      I knew the band for several years already, but never gave it a good listen. This year I listened through their discography, while reading the lyrics and all. Man, what a journey. They are one of a kind, completely original. Their style is far from clichĂ©s such as satanic rituals, haunted forests and vikings, instead they are about disgust towards our modern age, and what has become of France and Europe in general. Their songs range from old medieval poems, pogroms, and life in medieval times, to poems from the 18th/20th centuries and overturning the government to establish monarchy again. The lyrics are filled to the brim with historical references, which makes it a plus for history enthusiasts such as myself. If you’re to listen to the song below, make sure you read the translated lyrics in the description.

      @icecreamlair

      Glad you like it. I’m sick of bands singing about worshiping Satan and stuff like that. It is perfectly fine for old school bands to do that shit, but for modern bands which were created from the end of the 90s until now, it is really annoying and unoriginal. Regarding the dark lore stuff, that’s basically what some old school bands such as Burzum have done, even in the 90s when the second wave of black metal was born (in Scandinavia) there already were some people who thought all of this satanist bullshit to be of poor taste.

      The truth is that in our age all of this Satanism and anti-Christianity in metal, and music in general, is part of the Politically Correct culture, and that’s why you will never see cucked snowflakes complaining about these satanist or anti-christian only bands, and Antifa faggots will never show up at their concerts and try to censor them by shutting it all down. You only see these sub-human scum complaining about bands such as Peste Noire, which proves they are on the right path.

      Another thing I hate about Black Metal is their live visuals, which I find to be ridiculous, childish and faggot-looking, to say the least. That’s why I mostly ignore live shows by black metal bands. Peste Noire already abandoned these styles, so they also get a plus for this. Below are 2 videos of PN putting up a street performance in the streets of Kiev.
