Here in Scotland The Gong Show arrived in the late-1970s. Re-runs of this fine US Show became a staple of “plunking” off school (playing truant or hookey) for me. I remember being astonished at some of the acts but also at just how amazing and brilliant Chuck Barris was. Jamie Farr and Jaye P Morgan were often on the show and I loved them. When this episode of the show aired in Scotland in the middle of the afternoon I was suitably astonished.

When this one came on me and my friend Ian were both crying with laughter in about 30 seconds.

Forget “Pop Idol” or “The Voice” that we have nowadays posing as “talent” shows. The Gong Show is what we should be having.

I grew up on that show LOL! I always thought he was forever stoned and was shocked when I watched his documentary and his claims of never touching single drug

Of course the 1990s were a time of liberation for women – even here in Scotland. Right at the forefront of this was “Chewin’ the Fat” a comedy vehicle for some of Scotland’s finest writers and actors. The scene of the little boys at the ice cream van is a revolutionary one, challenging the view that women are sexual objects to be stared at by men. When the boys says “He’s wantin’ a swatch at yer fanny..” he means “He would like a look at your fish vent or lobster trap.” (“fanny” doesn’t mean backside in Scotland – it means front side).

This is really, really marvellous. Over the years it just gets better every time I watch it. Perfect pace and beautifully measured delivery. Explaining the facts of life to your son in the traditional English way.
