Indian Baby Born with Harlequin Ichthyosis

Indian Baby Born with Harlequin Ichthyosis

In India’s Patna district of Bihar, a baby girl was born prematurely with Harlequin Ichthyosis. According to local reports, the 28 year old mother called the baby “a curse“, though she seems to be holding onto the curse none the less.

Harlequin Ichthyosis causes the skin to grow much faster than normal, resulting in buildup of thick, dry, fish-scale skin. Harlequin Ichthyosis is a permanent condition – there is no cure.

This is the second reported case of Harlequin Ichthyosis in India. The first was born to a 23 year old woman from Amravati in Maharashtra in June of 2016 at Lata Mangeshkar College and Hospital in Nagpur. Her baby only survived for 48 hours.

Chances of this baby’s long term survival are likewise next to none.

  1. Anyone else wondering what ribbon the county fair’s prized squash got? They should get some major points for presentation at least, wrapping it up with a lettuce leaf garnish like that. Yum…

But goddamn, the poor little thing – hope its suffering ends soon – that has to be excruciating right?

  2. Its obvious she is keeping the unfortunate infant for money. It is common for the family to charge money to see unusual births, etc….It is a fatal and painful death. The skin is a hardshell which breaks, cracks and bleeds every time the baby moves. I can’t believe a hospital would not have compassion to give palliative care..releasing a dying suffering child to be displayed as a freak is heartbreaking.

  3. He need to be rub right now !!!! !
Thoses person need to be soak, strongly rub and cover with greasy skin lotion to soften it eatch day because there skin grown 7 times faster then normal skin, if not, there skin became thicker and and hard and broke just like on the picture. Even there cornea grown faster. The eyelids turn upside to show the red conjonctive because of stifness. They also had internal temperature problems because of your thick and non-sweating skin . They can died of fever shock.
