Two Die as Towing Rope Bursts During 4x4 Rally in Sri Lanka

Something different from Sri Lanka. Usually all that comes out of there are allegations of the government raping Tamil women or LTTE carrying out terrorist attacks.

The videos below are from a 4×4 rally held at Owitiyawatta in Kochchikade. According to the rally’s spokesperson, a jeep got stuck in a mud on a slope and needed an assistance of a recovery vehicle to get out of there. A towing rope the recovery vehicle used allegedly burst and in a rapid whip backlashed towards the crowd of onlookers who ignored the safety warnings and got too close.

The above is the official version of the story, though to me it looks like the mount ripped off the bumper, probably owing to poor bolting or welding jobs. With a chunk of metal attached to the end of the rope, it snapped back after high tension applied to it like a deadly projectile breaking skulls of two people.

A 20 year old youth died on the spot due to head injuries, another young man died due to the same later in hospital. Two more people were hospitalized with non life threatening injuries.

Two videos of the same incident are available, both are of shit quality. The first one is super shaky with much of the footage containing uber closeup of a finger print. The other one is much more stable but filmed in a very low resolutiona.

This video is less shaky but was filmed on an ancient cell phone with very low resolution and poor picture quality:

  1. Typical Asian fashion with people all over the god damn place.

Normally you would expect the organizers to look after their audience and make some kind of buffer zone. But not in Sri Lanka. Naw hells no!

    1. Off road race in california a few years ago had tragic results, a highly modified race truck rolled and killed a few spectators that were literally only a couple feet from the track.. Its not as uncommon as one might think.

  2. Brutal. There was a woman over here a few months back that had the unfortunate task of eating a tow bar that detached itself from her husbands 4wd, and made it thru the windscreen in a similar situation (she was killed) It is alot more common than people think.

  3. Sad how they all just stand around, couldn’t see even one person offering assistance, unless I missed it. I’ve heard a story of a ships mourning snapping and slicing a deck hand in two. Point to note, steer clear of ropes under extreme stress!

    1. Yeah, deaths like this are more common than you think.

Once a rope snapped and fortunately hit my leg. It was intensely bruised and you could see the line where it hit. Probably would have caused brain damage if it would have hit my head.
      Life goes on…

  4. I could be wrong but it appeared the rope did not tear. A peice of the bumper was ripped off and thrown into the crowd. The vehicle was obviously not meant for towing. Reminds me of when aircraft carrier barriers snap and slice men in various halves.

  5. From someone who owns a jeep and loves to go off roading, let me just say wtf do Indians know about off roading, this is what happens when people in other countries try to do stupid things that Americans like to do for fun…they get killed

  6. i always get scared whene my dad uses the electric shit for his trailer cuz i feel like its jst gunna snap someday and hit him and the wire is metal..but hes been towing muscle cars for years so he knows what hes doing but still shit happens and it makes me scared shitless
